Contemporary Marathi Poetry

Some more connectivity – Sanjeev Khandekar from:

Sachin Ketkar has translated and put together a collection of contemporary Marathi poetry. His accompanying introductory essay notes the major shifts, trends, conflicts and concerns in the poetry scene in Marathi. He identifies two broad schools: urban and non-urban. This division is based more on the concerns expressed in poetry than on the physical location or background of the poets. His translations and the intro can be read here.

The panorama of the contemporary Marathi poetry shows that the poets seem to fall into two broad type of clusters: one cluster of the poets are located in the urban and metropolitan centres like Vrajesh, Hemant, Sanjeev Khandekar, Manya Joshi and others. The second cluster of poets is from non-metropolitan locations, Bhujang Meshram and so on. These two clusters are not so much indicative of the geographical location as that of literary sensibility. This opposition is problematic but still useful as a point of entry into the contemporary Marathi poetry scenario. Its use primarily is to indicate the fact that the Marathi poetry today has a strong sense of location to it. It also indicates the variation and problematics of the relationship of sociological locations with poetry.
